Seagate ST500DM002-1BD142 HDD in pre-fail status

After the exact 5 years of usage, a Seagate ST500DM002-1BD142 HDD installed on an HP EliteDesk is in its "pre-fail" status.

Although the hard drive still passes the S.M.A.R.T test, the report details are not optimistic:

  • 05 Reallocated Sector Count and 196 Reallocated Event Count are both "8";
  • 01 Raw Read Error Rate and 07 Seek Error Rate are increasing with a huge number;
  • 09 Power-On Hours is 39478 hours.

A piece of relieving news is that the Seagate HDDs usually have huge 01 Raw Read Error Rate and 07 Seek Error Rate numbers because of different counting criteria among manufacturers, which does not suggest a serious problem. Since the 05 Reallocated Sector Count and 196 Reallocated Event Count are not increasing, hope this drive will last long enough to fulfil its expected duty.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018) upgraded to macOS 10.15 Catalina (19A602)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018) is retired from Developer Beta track and upgraded to macOS 10.15 Catalina (19A602) by clicking the "GET" button manually at the App Store. Although this is the official release of the latest system, there are some issues to be solved:
  • Xcode 11.1 cannot be installed successfully in App Store with repeating re-installing and failed attempts;
  • CPU thermal thrust is back with abnormal voltage and clock frequency, which leads to system freezing sometimes;
  • Legacy 32-bit applications are not running on this platform anymore, e.g. Google Picasa 3.9 to which no desirable alternative is found;
  • V2rayU 1.4.1 is not working on the new platform for unknown reasons. Outbound traffic is fine but no inbound traffic can be received.

In general, this is not a satisfactory version and noticeable bugs are waiting to be fixed.

Ganss ALT-71 Bluetooth keyboard

Ganss ALT-71 Bluetooth keyboard has a 70% layout which enjoys a perfect balance between size and usability. It is equipped with additional [Insert], [Home], [End], [`/~], [Delete] [Page Up] and [Page Down] keys than some smaller 60% layouts; especially the [`/~] and [Insert] keys are very useful in Linux and Latex environments.

Other advantages of this model include:
  • Easy shortcuts to change between USB Type-C to USB Type-A wired or Bluetooth wireless modes;
  • The Bluetooth connection is very stable and never interferes with other 2.4GHz devices, e.g. iPhone XR, Apple Magic Mouse 2 and Bose QuietComfort 35 II.
  • Cherry MX switches and PBT keycaps;
  • Generally acceptable build quality and competitive price (RMB 399 on JD.com and Tmall.com).

There are some minor issues not commonly mentioned in other reviews but needs to be noted:
  • Attempts to change the Bluetooth device name is always unsuccessful in macOS 10.15 Catalina; it will always be changed back to the default name "ALT-68/71 Bluetooth Keyboard";
  • LEDs on both sides occasionally flashes in red colour and cannot be turned off by shortcuts. This looks like a kind of alarm but not mentioned in the user manual. The only way to fix this is to connect the keyboard by wire and do a factory reset by pressing [Fn] + [Sapce], but sometimes the error will be back soon;
  • No driver or application for macOS;
  • macOS Mode can not be remembered after switch off, so Windows Mode is always activated when turned on each time, and there is no light or indicator tell which mode is on;
  • Two different hardware versions carrying the same ''Ganss ALT-71" are being sold in the market, but it is hard to tell which is which. The only way to check is to read the Hardware ID in Windows Device Management;
  • Buggy and faulty official Ganss website with HTML code errors.

The product design is more than expected and the company is young, so advantages are remarkable and minor flaws are easy to notice. Some critics said, "if this model had been released two or three years earlier, the ALT-71 would have been a huge success."

macOS 10.15 Catalina Developer Beta 10 update

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018) is updated to macOS 10.15 Catalina Developer Beta 10.

Known issues:
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro DC 2019 installers earlier than 19.012.20040 (August 29, 2019) freezes at the license page, possibly related to the newly introduced ''Macintosh HD'' and ''Macintosh HD - Data'' volume division;
  • CPU thermal thrusting has been back in the last few Developer Beta releases and it is not fixed yet;
  • Legacy 32-bit applications are not able to run anymore.

It is rumoured that macOS Catalina is to be officially released on 4 October 2019, but the development quality control is still not optimistic.

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M132fw

An HP LaserJet Pro MFP M132fw all-in-one printer and scanner is added to the wireless LAN for home-sharing:
  • Disabled the printer and scanner 2.4GHz WiFi transmission;
  • Tested various positions’ signal strength in the study, living room, and staircase;
  • Tested shared printing and scanning tasks on Windows and macOS.

Known issue:
  • M132fw cannot be connected to wireless LAN via TP-Link TLWDA7332RE 5GHz WiFi signal extenders. The reason is unknown and might be related to the WiFi authentication rules. The printer is directly connected to the router so its range and position are limited because of the signal strength.

Home router Linksys WRT1900ACS

Home router Linksys WRT1900ACS and auxiliary devices:

  • Changed WiFi WPA2 password;
  • Updated OpenWRT Luci and Git packages;
  • Reconnected two TP-Link TL-WDA7332RE WiFi range extenders.
