Seagate ST500DM002-1BD142 HDD in pre-fail status

After the exact 5 years of usage, a Seagate ST500DM002-1BD142 HDD installed on an HP EliteDesk is in its "pre-fail" status.

Although the hard drive still passes the S.M.A.R.T test, the report details are not optimistic:

• 05 Reallocated Sector Count and 196 Reallocated Event Count are both "8"; 
• 01 Raw Read Error Rate and 07 Seek Error Rate are increasing with a huge number;
• 09 Power-On Hours is 39478 hours. 

A piece of relieving news is that the Seagate HDDs usually have huge 01 Raw Read Error Rate and 07 Seek Error Rate numbers because of different counting criteria among manufacturers, which does not suggest a serious problem. Since the 05 Reallocated Sector Count and 196 Reallocated Event Count are not increasing, hope this drive will last long enough to fulfil its expected duty.
